Week of March 11th, 2002

Friday March 12, 2002

I do apologize; I've been desperately trying to get here all week. Unfortunately, it seems to be a recurring theme of late that there's no day left at the end of time. Bother. Ah well, learning lots about Gentoo; I remain thoroughly impressed. It's a rock solid and flexible distro. Recommended. Follow the bouncing installation HOWTO (word for word), and you'll have a fully customized Linux install in no time...

Tripped over a handful of cool URLs in my travels this week, but they'll have to wait until tomorrow -- I'm toast.

Monday March 11, 2002

Greetings. Here I am back for my routine Monday post ;-) Seems over the course of the last three or four weeks I've managed to find a rhythm for Monday, Tuesday, and sometimes Wednesday. After that, however, I fall apart. Yep. YACW. See last Monday if you missed that...

The weather has finally warmed. Well, warmed slightly. Tonight it's hovering around -10, but the wind's still pretty violent. Cold weather does not bother me; wind chill does.

Did you catch the 9/11 documentary last night on CBS? The best documentary I've ever seen. If you missed it, you missed something important and historic. When it returns, make sure you watch it. Recommended viewing.

This is cute -- I'm having this back-n-forth with Moshe this morning, and I tell him about the new IBM "mobile workstation" I've fallen in love with (the ThinkLite is so cool). He promptly writes back, giggling, and tells me he's currently working away on a new A31u as we speak. Sheesh. Talk about gall. I'm blessed to have such good friends; SLG (that's Silly Lopsided Grin).

Busy, busy busy... creating topic ideas/outlines for IBM. And in the process of it all, it struck me what a cool time it is to be involved with Linux, and all the cool Open Source apps that are quietly maturing. Samba, Apache, the upcoming Gnome 2.0 and KDE 3.0 desktops, Evolution, LDAP, yada and yada. What a pleasant dilemma -- it's actually hard to refine what I want to write about due to the wide diversity in available topics.

Gentoo's been churning away on Phoenix now for three or four days without a hiccup. In case you didn't zoom in on this last week, I LIKE Gentoo; the concept, the implementation, the works. I'm thinking it's almost time to scrub XP off my notebook and try to live in the world of Linux 24/7. The last time I tried, I missed Word and FrontPage. I've weened myself off of the FrontPage thing (I use HomeSite religiously now for about everything web related), and I tend to work in text documents now, so apps should not be a problem. Mmm. Maybe when I get my new IBM ThinkPad (heh-heh).

When am I moving my site to a PHPNuke format? RSN. Moshe informed me today that 5.5 is out, and stable. I have a eval IBM xSeries server coming -- hopefully this week. When it arrives I think I'll set it up as my front line web server with PHP, Apache, mySQL, Nuke, etc, and have anudder look at PHPNuke. I'll post a URL when I have one.
